On the surface they can look almost identical to a genuine Allen Yellofin, but the differences that matter are the ones you cannot see from across the room. Here is what our team checks for, and why it matters for patient safety.
1. Boot and pad materials
Genuine boots use medical-grade padding and coverings that hold their shape and resist tearing through years of use and cleaning. Knockoff pads often use lower-density foam and thinner coverings that compress permanently, reducing support and creating pressure points.
2. Locking mechanism engagement
The main lock should engage crisply and hold position under load without creep. On inferior units we frequently find locks that feel vague, slip under weight, or wear quickly, any of which can allow unintended movement during a procedure.
3. Weld quality and frame finish
Authentic frames show clean, consistent welds and an even anodized finish. Counterfeit frames often reveal rough or porous welds, uneven coatings, and early corrosion, all signs of a frame that may not hold up to repeated load cycles.
4. Hardware and fasteners
Fastener grade matters. Knockoffs commonly substitute softer hardware that strips, loosens, or fails to hold torque, which changes how the whole assembly behaves over time.
5. Lift-assist and pneumatic performance
